NORFOLK FBA BREEDING AWARDS 2020 & 2021
At the 2022 AGM of Norfolk FBA, breeding awards were presented for both 2020 and 2021 there having been no AGM in 2021.
For 2020, 22 members sent in breeding results with a total of 1733 birds bred which was a slight increase on the 2019 total. In the Seedeater section (ex Australian) 15 different species were represented in the total of 311 bred. This included one previously unrecorded as bred by a member, namely the White Headed Buffalo Weaver. The majority of the birds bred were from 2 species, the African Silverbill with 152 bred and the Java Sparrow with 105. Both these numbers were significantly down on 2019. Good breedings came from the Orange Cheeked Waxbill (2 bred), Chestnut & Black Weaver (5), Golden Song Sparrow (7) and Red Crested Finch (4). A gold award went to Andy Priestly and silver award to Lisa Clingan.
In the Australian section, 480 birds were bred from 14 species, over 100 up on the 2019 total. the most numerous breedings were Gouldian Finch with 140, Star Finch with 72 and Cherry Finch with 51. Other notable species bred were Painted Finch with 22 and Red Browed Finch with 15. the gold award was won by Gary Wincomb, silver by David Lugo and bronze by Les Tooley.
Parrotlike species bred totalled 195 from 16 species significantly higher than recent years Five new Conure species were recorded, the Black Capped, Crimson Bellied, Maroon Bellied, Rose Crowned and Sun. The Quaker Parakeet was another new species. Most numerous were the Green Cheeked Conure with 64 and Peach faced Lovebird with 49. Other notable species recorded were the Cobalt Winged Parakeet, Moustached parakeet and Red Bellied Parrot. A gold award went to Trevor Tooley and silver to Geoff Smith.
A total of 30 Softbills bred was on a par with the previous year and came from 6 different species. Species bred not previously recorded were the Chestnut Thrush and Blue Necked Tanager. Other notable breedings included the Pekin Robin with 13 bred and Bali Starling with 2. Awards went to Andy Priestley (gold) and Richard & Simon Porritt (silver).
There were 154 Pigeons and Doves bred from 15 different species. Diamond Doves were the most numerous with 81 bred but the rest were spread amongst a number of unusual species including Socorro, Bronzewing Pigeon, Luzon Bleeding Heart Dove and Gold Billed ground Dove. Pheasants and Quail bred totalled 140 from 5 species, the highest for many years. The most numerous were Chinese Painted Quail with 78, and 34 Jungle Bush Quail were bred, a first for the club. Also new was the Lady Amherst Pheasant. Awards in these sections went to Andy Priestley with gold and Geoff Smith with silver.
Also recorded as bred were 214 Bengalese and 205 Zebra Finches.
For 2021, the number bred was 1804 by 25 members. For Seedeaters 356 were bred from 12 different species. Most numerous were African Silverbill with 140 bred and Java Sparrow with 119. Three previously unrecorded species were bred, namely Black Chinned Siskin, Black Hooded Siskin and White Rumped Munia (also known as Striated or Sharp tailed). Not recorded for several years, the St Helena Waxbill made a welcome reappearance with 7 bred. A number of members also bred the Cutthroat with 30 bred. Breeding awards went to Colin Ronald (gold and Steven fisher (silver).
Australian Finches bred totalled 531 form 12 species. Most numerous were the Gouldian Finch with 166, Star Finch with 68 and Cherry Finch with 61. Good numbers were also recorded from Blue Faced Parrotfinch (39), Red Headed Parrotfinch (38) and Painted Finch (30). The 28 Chestnut Breasted Munia bred was the highest for several years. David Lugo won the gold award, Gary Wincomb silver, and bronze awards went to Anderson & Hudson and Sarah Bradford.
A total of 184 Parrotlike species recorded from 14 species was again very good. The species with the most bred were Green Cheeked Conure with 58 and Peach Faced Lovebird with 51. Six species of Conure were represented, and Plumhead Parakeet were bred for the first time in many years. Trevor Tooley was given a gold award.
Softbill numbers were down at 19 but again included Bali Starling and Blue Necked Tanager. A new species recorded was the White Cheeked Bulbul with 5 bred. A gold award went to Andy Priestley and silver to Richard & Simon Porritt.
Pigeons and Doves totalled 164 from 20 different species. New species were the Black Naped Fruit Pigeon and Salvins Pigeon. Other unusual species included the Sulawesi Quail Dove, Socorro Dove, Olive Pigeon and Lemon Dove. Most numerous bred were Diamond Dove with 79. Pheasants and Quail bred totalled 17, the lowest number for any years due to the fact that for the first time no Chinese Painted Quail were reported as bred. Two new species were recorded though, the Common Hill Partridge and Peacock Pheasant. Another species not previously bred was the Blacksmith Plover. Colin Jackson and Andy Priestley were both awarded gold medals.
Also bred were 156 Bengalese and 376 Zebra Finch.
