NORFOLK FOREIGN BIRD SHOW
NORFOLK FOREIGN BIRD ASSOCIATION - 2019 OPEN SHOW REPORT The 2019 Norfolk Foreign Bird Association Open Show was held on 29 September. The number of entries was higher than last year at an excellent 374 making it the second highest entry since the early part of the century. it is now the largest all foreign show in the UK. There were not many absent birds 335 were benched. Benched entries would have been about 15 higher but one exhibitor unfortunately had to miss the show at the last minute with a foot injury. Sponsorship received once again was magnificent. There are a lot of people who work tirelessly in ensuring the show runs smoothly so first of all thanks to some of them. Firstly, Steve Downes for all his work as show secretary and in obtaining the sponsorship, and to his wife Tracey and daughter Lara who assisted him throughout the day. Many thanks to Daphne, Sue, Maureen and others who provided an excellent lunch plus bacon sarnies in the morning and refreshments throughout the afternoon. You all did a brilliant job. Thanks also to Steve Downes again who slept in the hall overnight (and probably still has the nightmares!) with some of the exhibits. Not forgetting of course the various club members who helped throughout the day on the door, in the car park, sweeping the floor etc to ensure that the show ran smoothly. Thanks also to Steve Downes, Steve Fisher and Dave Woodhouse who got the staging up on the Saturday evening. This certainly made the Sunday morning a bit easier. The new staging received a number of compliments throughout the day. We would also like to thank the business sponsors and individuals for their generous support. It really is appreciated. Finally, but not least, thanks to all the exhibitors as there would not be a show without your continued support. Exhibitors travelled from as far as Northumberland and we hope you all enjoyed the experience and will return next year. If you have any ideas as to how we improve the show, please let either Steve Downes, Dave Woodhouse or Nick Elliston know. After the foreign section had been judged, the judges Terry Sayers and Robbie Young first needed to select the best CYOB exhibit. The section winners to consider were Eric Michie's White Java Sparrow, Andy Morton's Opaline Pallid Peachfaced Lovebird, the Red Browed Finch owned by Steve Fisher, Lisa Barnsdale's pair of Normal African Silverbill and Dave & Hazel Harris's cock Violet Eared Waxbill. The award for best CYOB in show went to the White Java. This exhibit then went forward for consideration as best in show together with Steve Fisher's Canary Winged Parakeet, Colin & Val Rowe's Black Crowned Waxbill, Cath Warren's Spreo Starling, Eric Michie's adult Silver Java, David Brown's Grey Hecks Grassfinch and Eric Michie's adult Normal African Silverbill. After some deliberation the Black Crowned Waxbill was chosen as best in show with the Spreo Starling second best and the Silver Java third. The Java was also best New Adult Owner Bred in show. Congratulations to Colin & Val on their win, their second best in show here in succession and third in four years. The Lovebird section showed a small increase in entries from last year with 18 benched entries facing judge Terry Sayers, with one class containing 9 entries. Best was a well coloured Fischers owned by Andy Morton which was also best adult. Best CYOB was the same exhibitors Opaline Pallid Peachfaced which will improve with age. There were also some Abysinnian's benched. The Parrotlike section was disappointing with only 3 exhibits with best the Canary Winged Parakeet owned by Steven Fisher. There were no CYOB entries. Entries in the Australian section were very good with 68 benched. This was up there with the biggest entry that this section has had, and presented judge Robbie Young with quite a challenge. It included an adult Gouldian class of 10 and the adult Cherry, Stars class had 8 entries. In the adult section, David Brown's lovely conditioned Grey Hecks was judged as best, and best adult. Second best was a normal Hecks belonging to Derek & Pat Smith whilst a bold, steady Red Headed Gouldian was third for Barry Whiting. Fourth was the Parson Finch benched by Steve Mouncer.
